Description
Materials: sterling silver, silver
Two very special little birds. These are exquisite, sterling silver card holders or possible menu holders in the shape of owls made by the celebrated Sampson Mordan in the first few years of the 20th century. The craftsmanship shown in these, as in all his work is just so extraordinary with the finest details of feathers, feet, ears…. The inserted glass eyes were a stroke of genius, giving the tiny creatures a life-like appearance.
Both hallmarks are for Chester: one is very clear for 1909, the other is worn but is likely to be for the same year. The overall condition of both owls is excellent. They measure just under 3 cm in height.
