About this item

Antique silverplated water jug in Arts and Crafts style by makers Deykin and Harrison dating from between 1895 and 1907. Deykin and Harrison were based in Birmingham having been established in 1781 – the firm continued in continual production until the late 1930’s. The mark on this jug denotes a time in the very late 19th century when, amongst other innovations the company had a Venetian line. This explains the gondola mark in the second cartouche of the maker’s mark. When marking items Deykin and Harrison used numbers 1, 2 and 3 to classify quality. This probably explains the figure 1 next to the maker’s mark. Figure 1 guaranteed a life expectancy of at least 25 years!!

This gorgeous water jug just screams Arts and Crafts with its sleek, unfussy design and wicker-bound handle. The slender, handsome body measures 20 cm in height. The jug has been checked for water-tightness and passed!

Things to be aware of: the teeniest ding to the main body (see the last photo); a little unevenness to the base (see second to last photo); a very slight ‘play’ in the lid hinge; a loosening of the wicker around the top curve of the handle (see second or third photo).
